I feel the need to disclose the fact that I am not a therapist, or any kind of mental health specialist really. I am someone, however, that had suffered from mental health issues for over fifteen years and in that sense, I guess you could say I’m an “expert”. I’ve spent the last years learning about myself, how to maintain mental health, and teaching myself how to live a balanced and fulfilling life. I will say that if you are able to afford a therapist, you should get one. Even if you’re someone that doesn’t suffer from mental health issues – day to day life can be overwhelming for anyone and I am a true believer in that we all deserve an outside perspective to vent and console with. I, however, could not afford a therapist and that is how the journey really started – well that and because I saw a Pinterest post that motivated me in a weird way. Mental health is talked about more now than it was when I was a kid – the conversation is open, but I feel like sometimes it falls on deaf ears. If you are suffering from mental health issues, external circumstances, or even just from the daily chaos that is overwhelming enough; you’re not alone in your journey and trust me when I tell you it gets easier. You have to understand that the choice is yours to make, you have to want change so bad that you’re willing to eat, sleep, and breathe that aspect of change. And if you don’t know where to start the answer is simple: Start from the beginning.
